Flowers

Arrangements of flowers are used regularly as decorating essentials. These can be readily incorporated into any design scheme. However, offered as follows are ideas for adding a little zest to your flowers. Think beyond the traditional vase and consider new ways to showcase blossoms.

  • Flatten flower petals. Many children do this, and it is a striking way to display flowers. The process for flattening is easy: simply place petals between wax paper and a tower of books. The results can be placed in picture frames, arranged on a plate, or placed in-between the glass top and wood base of a side or coffee table.
  • Change the vase you use. Frequent garage sales and antique stores for unusual items that can be used as vases. Perfume bottles, antique teapots, and metal or glass milk jugs are all containers that can be used to perfectly arrange flowers.
  • Fill your vase with something that complements your flower arrangement. Colorful cellophane, marbles, and miniature lemons are all ideas for vases that, when added, can create a lovely centerpiece. However, you will need to use artificial flowers with such additions.

Candles

No easier decorating element exists besides candles. Several votives strategically placed around the house add warmth, fragrance, and depth. However, slight variations to the standard votive can make for an arresting decorative piece.

  • Place taper candles inside shot glasses. Tea light or votive candles also work, but tapers create an atmosphere of elegance similar to that of upscale restaurants. Select shot glasses that have interesting patterns or designs on the outside. Also feel free to elect for scented candles for this project. Prevent the tapers from toppling out of the glass by first filling it with colored sand found at your local craft store.
  • Set glowing candle balls on wall shelves. The whole of these candles is made from wax, but they are designed so only the inside of the candle burns when lit, and the rest of the ball remains intact. These cast soft glows, and they can be burned on a shelf or table with little concern.

When you are in the mood refresh the look of your home, walk through it with a critical eye and analyze ways in which you can innovatively use common interior decorating pieces. You will like the results.
